The Thing that Mountains Make
— rachel sucher

after Arthur Golden, W.C. Fields, Roseanne Cash, and Dannie Abse

Even a straight stick turns crooked

in water. Clouds have no constant

resemblance to anything.

The river is everywhere.

It continues quivering,

even after a stone

has sunk to the bottom.

A stone is not a mountain.

A stone is a thing that mountains make.

Like how the river bends,

turns the stick crooked.

A stick is a thing that trees make.

Trees are everywhere

on the mountain. Where the river bends,

where it wears away the stone.
